Farm Activities
Farm Stay
For families from the city, the concept of farm life can be hard to fathom. Getting food involves nothing more than a trip to the supermarket, where it comes from and how it’s grown, never factor into the process.
Bunyah Creek Farm is a place to discover how things find their way to your table. We’re not a farm in the commercial sense that is a supplier to food logistics networks, but rather a smallholding that produces enough for our table and the activities that we provide for our guests.
Two-thirds of the farm is devoted to wildlife preservation and eco-tourism, and the remaining third is devoted to orchards, vegetables, chickens, and a few agisted cows from time to time.

Farm activities we can organise for you.
Organised Activities
We offer family visitors the following organised activities.
Tour of the farm on the back of the tractor (weather permitting)
Chicken wrangling duties for the kids; letting them out, feeding them, and collecting their eggs
A guided walk through the vegetable garden to teach kids where and how their food gets to them
If we have cattle on the farm, a tractor ride to meet the cows, and a talk on how they finally end up on your plate
A bird-watching walk to view and identify our resident and visiting birds
For an additional cost of $150, we can do a three-hour pick and preserve activity, where we will source some fruit or vegetables from the veggie patch or orchards and create some jam, relish, sauce, or pickles. The cost covers the fruit/vegetables, other ingredients, jars, lids, labels, and the use of the appropriate preserving equipment. (this activity needs to be booked in advance with Wayne and is only available if we have excess produce available.) You get to take the fruits of your labour home with you, labeled by you to suit your requirements.
Other activities you can do on the farm at your leisure
There are plenty of ways to occupy yourselves while on the farm. the following are a few of our suggestions:
Head down to the creek and explore this small micro climate on the farm. The creek contains shrimp and freshwater crayfish and very occasionally gets visited by the platypuses that live further down in the river system. The banks are home to Eastern Water Dragons, Bearded Dragons, Blue Tongue Lizards, Lace Monitors, Red Bellied Black Snakes and a family of Echidnas. In the canopy above you will observe birds like the Azure Kingfisher, Pheasant Coucal and Spectacled Monarchs which rarely are seen around the homestead and in the grasses you’ll find Red Backed Fairy Wrens, Southern Emu Wrens and Golden- Headed Cisticolas
Take a walk around our boundary fence. You’ll pass by the adjacent rainforest remnant with it’s Koalas and resident and visiting rainforest birds, wander along the edge of the creek and see its unique micro climate, head north along the road verge with its resident seed eating birds like Red Browed Finches, Crimson and Eastern Rosellas and return along our western fence line adjacent to the dry sclerophyll eucalypt stand. Along the way you will probably disturb a few Bennet’s Wallabies and set flight to some of the four species of Quail that inhabit the property
Take a walk around the homestead grounds and enjoy the plants and birdlife. We’ve recorded over 100 species of birds visiting the homestead grounds. There are over 60 stands of native and exotic orchids, most of which are epiphytes. There are dozens of different exotic and native shrubs. We also have an old orchard that we share with the birds and the native fauna and an extensive and highly productive vegetable patch.
Let the kids loose on the swing set, trampoline, cubby house, or outdoor cricket set. We can even find you a set of Boules if you fancy a throw.
Do some star gazing. The farm has a Class 2 light pollution rating, the second-best star-gazing rating for viewing the night sky. Time your visit for a new moon or when the moon rises late in the evening and sit back and marvel at the Milky Way as it snakes its way across the farm sky. Search out the planets and constellations that should be visible during your stay. This site will help you with planning and on the night. https://www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/night/@2165159
Get out of bed early and greet the new dawn from our sunrise outdoor lounge, complete with a fire pit. An early morning tea or coffee and an hour or so watching the ever-changing panorama as the sun rises from the east over our picturesque valley and the clouds and mist make way for the start of a new day is a wonderful way to start a day on the farm. If you plan to do this just let Wayne know and he’ll have the firepit set and ready.
